At Our Lady of Lourdes Primary School, reading is one of our main priorities. Reading is not only a relaxing, enjoyable activity but can benefit a child’s education, social and cognitive development, their wellbeing, and their mental health. Studies continually show that reading for pleasure makes a big difference to children’s educational performance. In every class, we encourage reading for pleasure in order that children develop a love of reading; with the aim of ensuring that all children leave Our Lady of Lourdes Primary School with excellent reading skills.
To develop early reading, we follow the ‘Letters and Sounds’ phonics programme, which was produced by the Department for Education. Children in Reception, Year 1 and Year 2 participate in a daily phonics lesson focusing on reading and spelling. Children in KS2 receive phonics teaching, if required, which may be taught to the whole class, in small groups or one to one work.
Parents are the most important educators in a child’s life – even more important than their teachers – and it’s never too early to start reading together. We respect the very important role that parents play in their child’s education and supporting us in achieving our aims.
How To Help Your Child
We have placed in our How to Help Your Child section, a selection of leaflets which we hope will assist you in helping your child with their reading and maths.
