On Friday, we had a visit from the Fire Brigade. They told the whole school about a recent rise in arson incidents in Shotton Colliery and explained the potential consequences of these. We also found out how the Fire Brigade have ways of identifying who started the fires.
Welcome back
We hope you have had a relaxing and reflective Easter. Summer Term is always a busy time in school, with SATs, transition days and Sports Week, to name just just a few events. As always, we look forward to working with you all to ensure the best outcomes for our children.
Super Scientists
Congratulations to our Year 5 and 6 Science Ambassadors, who won an award at Durham University on Friday. They competed against other schools and came came first with their interesting presentation about DNA, having impressed the panel of judges. They were excellent representatives for our school. Here they are displaying their fabulous trophy.
World Book Day
Many thanks to all our parents who attended our celebrations for World Book Day. We were overwhelmed with your support and hope you enjoyed sharing a love of reading with your child. All children took part in a Reading Rooms activity as part of their Reading Challenge. Here are just a few pictures from the morning.
Royal Visit to Beacon of Light
Key Stage 2 children enjoyed a fabulous afternoon attending the official opening of the Beacon of Light by the Countess of Wessex.
Photos will soon be available on our class blogs.
CAFOD Assembly
To help children begin their Lenten journey and inspire them to pray, fast and give, a representative from CAFOD visited us to talk with the whole school about the Give It Up Challenge. Through real-life examples of people’s lives, we were shown how your donations can help support those less fortunate. The campaign has the focus that ‘God has given enough resources on this planet for everyone. No one should go hungry.’
As a school, we are asking for your support in fundraising for this important cause.
Taking the give it up challenge can be simple:
-Give up a treat like chocolate or crisps to save the money normally spent.
-Give up something more special like cinema trips, to raise even more.
-Going the extra mile, give up a favourite activity and get sponsored.
All money raised will go directly to CAFOD.
Fairtrade Fortnight
Today marks the start of Fairtrade Fortnight. During this time, every class will be learning how we can ensure that farmers and workers in poor countries are paid fairly for their work and are able to live a dignified life.

Online Safety
Thank you to all parents who attended our Online Safety sessions. It was lovely to see so many parents come to share our learning about staying safe and being responsible online. This followed on from our whole school Safer Internet Day, following the theme of Together for a Better Internet. Feedback was very positive from all parents who attended.
Recycling Assembly
On Monday, the whole school had an information session on recycling. We found out what happens to our rubbish and what we can do to reduce waste by recycling efficiently. Please encourage your child to help our environment by helping out with recycling at home.
Safer Internet Day 2019
Safer Internet Day is celebrated across the world on Tuesday 5th February. All children in school will be learning about how to keep themselves safe and be respectful while online. Parents are invited into school on Wednesday morning to hear all about it. We look forward to seeing you there.
